WRITER · DIRECTOR · FOUNDER
Gijo Uthuppu.
AI filmmaker in India.
The tools have changed. The story still comes first.
I’m a writer-director from Kerala, working in Mumbai, and founder of Avium Studios in India. My AI filmmaking practice combines human creative direction with new image-making tools, real movement references and the craft of editing, music, sound and colour.
Chekavar: a world built for the story
I wrote and directed Chekavar, a 30-minute Hindi historical action film from Avium Studios and Garuda X Media. It is a fictional story with fictional characters, set against the Battle of Colachel in 1741. It was developed through the IICT and YouTube Create with AI programme, with Google AI tools, facilities and mentorship supporting the production.
We filmed real Kalari practitioners using real weapons to inform physical movement and action timing. AI helped us create the period world and scale; creative decisions remained with filmmakers. The sequence has to work as a scene, with believable emotion and continuity, rather than simply as a striking image.
My approach to AI film direction
Writing establishes the human stakes. Direction connects performance, framing, camera language and rhythm. Generated material is reviewed against the story and assembled in the edit. Music, sound and colour complete the experience. I want new tools to open ambitious possibilities while keeping that discipline intact.
Building Avium Studios
Through Avium Studios, an AI production studio in India, I work with a team across development, production and finishing. Our Mumbai presence with Garuda X Media is in Andheri West. I also co-founded Avium Studios UK for international projects and original stories.
